Modern faerie6/7/2023 This trilogy is incredibly fun and super easy to binge-read. She’s such an imaginative author who manages to mould her faeries into something both elegant and eerie. If that’s triggering for you, I’d recommend giving Holly’s other books a go.īut no matter what book Holly Black writes, you can truly see her expertise when it comes to faery lore. PSA: While this is marketed to a younger YA audience, there is a surprising amount of adult content in this trilogy, including homophobia, sexual assault, and an abundance of f-bombs. You can really see how much Holly Black has improved as a writer, from her début novel here to her more current ones. It also didn’t help that the sexy elf king, Thranduil from The Hobbit, was who I was imagining in my head! All in all, these were rather enjoyable, even though they weren’t that well-written. I probably wouldn’t have finished them if I hadn’t developed a crush on the sexy faery knight, Roiben.

Cs lewis joy6/7/2023 “While other biographers have provided excellent comprehensive, broad-ranging accounts of the events-large and small-which surrounded Lewis’s life, my goal is to focus closely on the story of Lewis’s spiritual journey and his search for the object of the mysterious longing he called Joy (always capitalized), a quest which he claimed was the central story of his life” (xi). A Life Observed: A Spiritual Biography of C.S. We find the hope for such a place throughout his writings.īrown, Devin. Why is this longing present if no such place exists? Living in our present place and life does not satisfy the longing. Lewis often talked about his longing, which he called Sehnsuch in German, for another-a better and more “distant” country-than the one we are living in.

Altered states book paddy chayefsky6/7/2023 Much of the setting of this part of the film also appears to be based on Artaud's description of the natural, altho seemingly man-made landscape of the people. Some of the events portrayed in this film seem to be based on the studies of the French surrealist author Antonin Artaud the protagonist visits a tribe of isolated Mexican tribal people & participates in their sacred shamanic ritual involving local hallucinogens for the purpose of investigating the common religious experience. In the film Chayefsky is credited under his real first and middle name, Sidney Aaron, because of disputes with director Ken Russell. Lilly, Chayefsky spent two years in Boston doing research to write his science fiction novel Altered States (HarperCollins, 1978), which he adapted for his last screenplay. Great expectations book6/6/2023 He holds his camera on the mist of England’s marsh country, which Pip traverses to lay flowers on his parents’ grave, and the moth-eaten wedding dress Miss Havisham still wears. Knight suffuses the palette of his series with Miss Havisham’s haunting whiteness. In FX’s new limited series, helmed by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and premiering Sunday, Dickens’s dialogue is less recited than interpreted. The classic 1861 novel, which explores Pip’s sudden elevation thanks to a mysterious benefactor, has inspired endless adaptations of varying faithfulness. Her trauma has trapped her in the past, one of Dickens’s central themes. She had a long white veil dependent from her hair, and she had bridal flowers in her hair, but her hair was white.” Later in the book, Pip learns from a relative of Miss Havisham’s why she clings so fiercely to this traditional wedding color: She was left at the altar by a fortune hunter. He observes one particular detail: Miss Havisham “was dressed in rich materials-satins, lace, and silks-all of white. She’s invited Pip to her mansion uptown to play with her adopted daughter, Estella, and he’s forced to attend by his domineering sister. No one who’s read Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations could forget the first time that Pip, the young orphan and blacksmith’s apprentice, meets the wealthy town recluse Miss Havisham.

Will is trying to move on from a devastating loss, so at first he is tentative, then eventually eager to enjoy another chance at love, all while second guessing himself and Jeremy as happens in a new relationship. Both are mature men, in their late thirties, which is a nice change for a gay romance. Will’s love interest is Jeremy, and their coming together and drifting apart and coming together again was depicted in a believable and understandable manner. Neil Plakcy expertly allows the reader to feel as if they are reading a modern day take on an Austen novel, and it was wonderfully soothing and engaging. Jane Austen’s books are prominently discussed and critiqued by the main character, Will (whose full name is Fitzwilliam and I immediately wanted to name someone that), who is an English professor teaching a sharp group of students during a J-term, or short winter term, class. This story has a lovely, gradually sweeping feel of romance to it.

Fish & chips abigail roux6/6/2023 If he dropped the bar when Alston wasn"t paying attention, there would be shit tons of paperwork to fill out. Clancy was too easily worked up for a five-year veteran, and Perrimore always took too much weight. Special Agent Scott Alston looked up from where he stood spotting Perrimore. Her ponytail bobbed along behind her as she bounced on the tips of her toes excitedly, the bright red hair clashing with her freckles and the flushed pink of her face. It"s worth it,” Clancy told them in a singsong voice. His biceps bulged as he pressed up sweat dotted the black skin along his closely shaved hairline. “Busy,” Special Agent Fred Perrimore grunted as he strained with the barbell. “HEY, Freddy, Scott, you got to check this out,” Special Agent Michelle Clancy said as she trotted into the free weights room of the FBI"s Baltimore field office gym. |
